Bowen Technique

Christine Dew

The Bowen Technique is a gentle form of body work using subtle moves over muscles and connective tissue which send messages deep into the body, retrieving cellular memory of a relaxed, balanced way of wellbeing. It was developed in the 1950's by the late Thomas Bowen in Geelong, Australia.

The therapy is distinguished by frequent but essential pauses throughout the session that allow the body time to respond and begin the healing process.

A unique skill of the Bowen practitioner is 'tissue tension sense', meaning that the practitioner is able to discern stress build-up in muscles and other soft tissue, enabling them to perform specific Bowen moves to assist recovery.

The technique addresses not only the musculo-skeletal framework but also the fascia, nerves and internal organs. The body's integrated response improves circulation and lymphatic drainage and aids in the assimilation of nutrients and elimination of toxins.

The therapy can help clients on all levels. Tom Bowen said that any condition could be addressed by the technique. The original Bowen Technique is extremely gentle and is considered appropriate for anyone. It can assist recovery from many conditions from traumatic injury to chronic illness, depending upon each individual's capacity to heal.

The Technique can be considered for:-

  • Back pain & sciatica
  • Neck/shoulder problems including whiplash & frozen shoulder
  • Respiratory problems including hay fever
  • Headaches, migraines, sinus problems
  • Digestive problems including IBS
  • Fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome
  • RSI, Carpal tunnel & tennis elbow
  • Knee, ankle & foot problems e.g. Bunions
  • Pelvic tilt, uneven leg length, groin pain
  • Menstrual & hormonal irregularities
  • Sports & accident injuries

A Bowen session initiates a cascade of beneficial changes that continue for several days. Results can be remarkable, even after one session. Clients often report major or total improvement in seemingly unrelated problems that they may have forgotten to mention to the practitioner.
